The whole reason the book is so incredible is how it does tell about the terrible things, but it focuses on the beautiful things -the people, the good memories, the victories. Don't even bother -and definitely don't let your kids see it. There were children in the theater! Should have been rated R in my opinion. And of course they had to add sex scenes.Īgain, deeply disturbing.

There were beautiful, happy scenes in that novel that never made it in the movie -even briefly. You see many animals being killed -shot, bombed, burned. And Jan! The zookeeper? He was barely in it! He was an amazing man and deeply involved in the Polish Resistance. Such a beautiful story, and they cut out whole characters, amazing true characters. But I don't understand why they focused on it. Of course there was violence, there had to be. I walked out after they began showing a forced breeding of bison. There was way more sexual tension than there was in the book. Apparently the Holocaust was not dramatic enough. Some of the characters were not even in the story originally -like the girl who was raped (violently enough to leave blood running down her legs). There were a few beautiful moments, but for whatever reason the producers focused on the terrible things. (I have never done that before.) I read the book and immediately thought, This book deserves a movie. I walked out in the middle of it, I was that disgusted. While it may be flawed in many places, 'The Zookeepers Wife' ultimately tells a unique and beautiful story of World War II that is led by a beautiful performance by Jessica Chastain. The real-life animals used in the film offer a unique viewpoint of the war, and aid the film to be a visual delight. In particular, Jessica Chastain's acting is nothing short of superb and is supported by great performances by Daniel Brühl and Shira Haas. Despite the poorly adapted narrative and misguided tone, the film fortunately contains several positive elements. The film spends too much time on certain side plots that are not of importance to the narrative, and only divert the audience from the real story that we came for.

What should have been a tense film showcasing the impact the war had on zookeeper couple Jan and Antonina Zabinska, and how they responded to the atrocity, ends up feeling quote misplaced with an approach that waters-down the struggle the couple would have gone through. The atmosphere of the film is misplaced and has an overall tone that doesn't belong. Based upon real life events that took place in Warsaw, Poland during World War II, this film fails to reach it's intended impact on the audience.
